U16s 2 : Farncombe 3

The U16’s hosted Farncombe on Sunday, with a number of players away or recovering from illness. Players and positions had to be tweaked accordingly but we were still able to field a strong squad and anticipated a good result.

That ‘good result’ looked to be on when Dylan Lawrance scored from a free-kick after just 3 minutes in the first half. It was a bit of a strange one that didn’t really have any power behind it, but still managed to evade every player in the box before finding the back of the net. This was added to just a minute later, as Jamie Smith was played through before placing the ball past the oncoming Farncombe GK to make it 2-0 with only 4 minutes gone.

However, that was as good as it got for the U16s as they completely lost focus and were pegged back to 2-2 by half time. Both of the Farncombe goals should have been easily dealt with, but lapses in concentration saw Abbey players switch off and not track runners – allowing Farncombe to pass through the lines and get in behind. Cheap goals for us to concede but fairplay to Farncombe for taking their chances.

Unfortunately for Abbey things got worse as Farncombe scored again in the 54th minute. Unbelievably we’d thrown away a 2 goal lead without any kind of fight and that was how it stayed until the final whistle.

A poor showing from the boys and the less said about this one the better. However, we still sit 3rd in the league and the lads will be looking to put this right with a good performance against Bedfont Sports next Sunday.
