Team spirit and a game plan well executed saw the Colts score heavily today against a strong Mayford team.
After the disappointment of last week we went into todays match wanting to show everyone we can play decent football and we certainly did straight from the off today. Abbey dominated the play as soon as the whistle went and we looked dangerous going forward with a changed 3-4-3 formation, it was hard to defend. It was on 14 minutes when our new signing Bryon Mitchell powered forward with the ball, took it round the keeper and then a Mayford player just got a touch on the ball but it knocked it straight into the path of Archie Mendoza who slotted it home, 1-0 to the home side and some great play by Byron.
It wasn't long before Abbey doubled their lead when on 22 minutes the Colts were awarded a corner and Archie floated in the cross to Antwone Brown who expertly headed it down and home, 2-0, what a fantastic set play move.
It was close to half time when Abbey got their third, a ball was passed down the left to Byron who again charged his way into the box, scooping his right foot round the ball on the left side to cross to Antwone to convert for his brace, 3-0 and then half time whistle went.
The vibe was good with the team talk at half time and detailed instructions given out. The team then went out and executed to this to perfection. On 39 minutes Anthony McGovern picked up the ball in the box and did some great work to position himself for a shot but the keeper was equal to it and saved well. However the save bounced off a Mayford defender and went straight into the back of the net, 4-0 Abbey.
The next 15 minutes Abbey managed to double that score playing some great stuff and being clinical too. On 44 minutes Sammy Stetner was brutally brought down in the box and we were awarded a penalty. Sammy didn't fancy it so up stood George Masters to convert with ease, 5-0. 8 minutes later Abbey were piling on the pressure still and a cleared ball by Mayford saw Antwone collect, pass to George Masters and from about 20 yards out. He composed himself brought it onto his deadly left foot and struck it beautifully into the top left bins.....wonderful goal....6-0.
A few minutes later George scored his hatrick when a long ball was put through, the Mayford keeper beat George to it but kicked fresh air for George onky have to run on and slot it home calmly, 7-0.
Abbey wasn't done there when on 62 minutes Sammy Stetner did some great work down the left, advanced into the box swung the ball across to an advancing Henry Bryant to clinically finish for Abbey's 8th.
The game finished 8-0 and what a performance. The coaches were so proud of every single one of the team and cannot fault their desire, calmness, defending and clinical finishing. Throughout the game the Colts played with freedom and enjoyment and that showed in the quality of football that was on display. Well done to all, everyone played out of their skins, and Samuel had very little to do in goal.
MOM- Carson Curtis, played in the centre of midfield today and was worried with the new role but there was no need to be. He cover the defence really well with some great tackles in the first half. He also went forward with intent and really excelled. Did everything the coaches asked of him.
